Vathal Kuzhambu


  1. Tamarind (புளி) lemon size
  2. Dried Sundakkai (சுண்டைக்காய்) 15 nos
  3. Sambar powder (சாம்பார் பொடி) 1 1/2 tsp
  4. Mustard seeds (கடுகு) 1/2 tsp
  5. Fenugreek (வெந்தயம்) 1/4 tsp
  6. Toor dal (துவரம் பருப்பு) 1/4 tsp
  7. Asafoetida powder (பெருங்காயம்) 2 pinch
  8. Salt (உப்பு) to taste
  9. Oil (எண்ணெய்) 1 tsp
  10. Curry leaves (கறிவேப்பிலை) 6 nos

Cooking Method:

  • Soak the tamarind in water for 15 minutes. Extract the juice and discard the pulp
  • In a pan, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, when it splutter add fenugreek and toor dal. Fry till the dal gets to brown colour.
  • Now add the sundakkai and fry it
  • Now pour the tamarind juice
  • Add salt, sambar powder, turmeric powder and asafoetida
  • Boil it for 6-7 minutes
  • If the kuzhambu is more watery, take 1 tsp rice flour and disolve it in little water and then add with kuzhambu.
  • Finally add the curry leaves into it
  • Note: Dried Sundakkai is already salted, so add only little salt to the Kuzhambu
