Avarakkai Usili



  1. Broad Beans / Avarakkai (அவரக்காய்) 1/4 kg
  2. Toor dal (துவரம் பருப்பு) 1/2 cup
  3. Mustard seeds (கடுகு) 1/2 tsp
  4. Split Urad dal (உடைத்த உளுந்து) 1/2 tsp
  5. Asafoetida powder (பெருங்காயம்) 1 pinch
  6. Red chilly (காய்ந்த மிளகாய்) 1 no
  7. Salt (உப்பு) to taste
  8. Turmeric powder (மஞ்சள்) 1 pinch
  9. Oil (எண்ணெய்) 1 tsp 

Cooking Method:

  • Soak the toor dal in water for 20 minutes and drain the extra water
  • Put it in mixie with asafoetida and red chilly. Grind it and make a paste
  • Put the toor dal paste in idly plate and cook it
  • In a kadai, pour the oil, add the cooked toor dal paste. Take the dosai karandi and make it to small pieces.(like rava upma). Keep it aside
  • Cut the Avarakkai into small pieces
  • Take another pan, pour the oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutter add urad dal and red chilly and fry till the dal gets brown colour.
  • Add the cut Avarakkai, salt and turmeric powder .
  • Add little water and cover the pan.
  • For every 3 minutes, open the pan and check if the avarakkai is fully cooked.
  • Once fully cooked add the paruppu usili into it and mix it well
